Houstonians are proud. We’re Texans, we’ve got great sports teams and our economy has remained strong throughout the recession.
Our city is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the nation, and is consistently ranked among the top in business, energy, technology and medicine, yet Haydn Shaughnessy’s list of the top 50 Power Influencers in Social Media fails to list a single person from Houston.
Most of us have been to plenty of Crystal and Lantern Awards ceremonies where we’ve seen great marketing and social media campaigns recognized for their ingenuity and effectiveness. We know there are great social media professionals in our amazing city, but who are they?
The Qualifications
For this ranking, I found every Twitter handle that mentioned Social Media in their bios and was located in or near Houston – about 250 total.
I added folks from LinkedIn near Houston with “Social Media” in their job titles. Finally I took to Twitter to ask people for their personal suggestions, increasing the total list to about 350.
I then took out any accounts belonging to businesses or agencies, or those belonging to people who weren’t focused on Social, reducing the list back down to 150. I fed these all into Peek Analytics and got the top 100.
The Metrics
When trying to find out who these influencers are, it’s important to gauge the activity and influence of their followers, both to measure the effectiveness of the content shared by the influencer, as well as to determine how active their followers are (bots and spam accounts are not likely to engage with content or have relationships developed across networks). With this in mind, we used the same methodology that Haydn used for the global list, PeekAnalytics‘ Total Social Pull.
Social Pull is a measure of the user’s audience, expressed as a factor of an average user. A score like Michele Price’s 825 means that she has 825 times the influence of the average user, but it’s not only a measure of network size. It also takes into account other social networks your followers are using, as well as their network sizes. Basically, if you have a lot of people in your network, and the people in your network have a lot of people in their networks, you’re more likely to be influential.
Social Pull as a metric isn’t perfect, as Mark Schaeffer notes in this blog post, but neither is Klout, Kred or PeerIndex. I’m simply using it in a spirit of using the same methods as the global list. You’ll see the social pull ratings as the number listed after each influencer’s Twitter Handle.
You can find your Social Pull here.
So without further ado…

Great list and fantastic work explaining the purpose and the methodology.
You did leave someone off the list though.
He’s a big part of the community and has even been mentioned on Forbes!
I am, of course, talking about the one and only @EricTTung
Ha – thanks Damien.
This post was all about community, networking and providing value back to the Houston Social Media community. Most definitely not about me!
I live in Scotland, but targeting users based on their Twitter bios is an idea I’ll have to steal from you 🙂 I produced a fun infographic about my top 5 social media influencers
http://wp.me/p3r2F1-M
Thanks for the tips Eric 🙂
Eric, thanks for including me on your list.
Just fyi, the links to each name appear to be malformed. They come up with a 404 page on your blog. For example, mine comes up as:
https://ericttung.com/2013/06/13/top-100-social-media-power-influencers-in-houston-2013/www.linkedin.com/in/dwightsilverman
Probably should be: http://www.linkedin.com/in/dwightsilverman
Although a better URL is: http://blog.chron.com/techblog
Thanks again!
Nice catch Dwight. Seems that if the “http://” is left off, WordPress seems to want to replace it with ericttung.com. Will update these all after work…!
Also, linked to the blog as well under “Houston Chronicle” in your description.
Pretty awesome list, great folks on it! Surprised none of our local politicians made the list. I am a little biased about a certain Mayor Pro-Tem 🙂
The list was a list of influencers on the subject of social media. Mayors, politicians, sports stars, megachurch pastors have lots of influence, just not about social!
Fair enough! Congrats again on a neat list.
I’m just perplexed since I seem to meet most of the qualifications. Thanks for the Peek Analytics link – I’m generating my user report now.
Thanks so much, Eric – really honored to be included on this list. I love that our city is home to so many social, savvy and brilliant minds / Twitter accounts. Cheers!
Yes – and that was the main purpose of the list. Get folks recognized and networked!
Sad not to make it on your list of cool kids but cool to see so many familiar names and friends on the list. My report gave me a pull of 50x.. lol.
Yes – see reply on 51-100 post. Sorry for the oversight.
Thank you Eric! I’m extremely honored to be on this list
Great meeting you today Madalyn – Will look forward to more about the Think tank 🙂
Thanks for pulling the list together, Eric! Houston is chock-full of social talent, for sure.
Glad to have you be a part Abi. Thanks!
Thanks for pulling the list together, Eric! Houston is chock-full of social talent, for sure.
Great list! Hope to make it on there one day!
Hey Scylla – include your Twitter handle and I’ll add it to the report next time to see! There were many that almost made it!
Proud to be a part of such a diverse and incredible community in Houston; thanks for shining the spotlight on how much we’ve grown, Eric!
Thanks for connecting Jamie, and thanks for your comments. That really was the whole idea. Get people talking, get people interested and show people who we are!
That’s Eric! I’m Honored and humbled to be included among so many awesome people!
Eric thank you for putting this list together and recognizing the talent in Houston. Most importantly thank you for getting us all networking with one another. I am honored!
Yay! Delighted to be on the list – Raegan
Thanks Raegan!
Shouldn’t be a surprise… You know EVERYONE!
Great list, thanks! Thought for sure Mike McGuff would be in the mix. He puts the “media” in social media > @mikemcguff
Is there a Meet Up in the Works? I would love to host it at my office @askportia @we_do_itBG #socialmedia ROCKS!
Thanks for finding me Eric!
Eric – Thanks for creating this, what a great resource! Maybe one day I’ll make such a list! -@cjcastillo
I have been exploring for a little bit for any high-quality articles or blog posts on this kind of area . Exploring in Yahoo I at last stumbled upon this site. Reading this information So i’m happy to convey that I’ve a very good uncanny feeling I discovered exactly what I needed. I most certainly will make certain to don’t forget this web site and give it a look on a constant basis.
